Welcome to the 13th annual DC Asian Pacific American (APA) Film Festival!
The theme of this year’s program naturally emerged in various voices and forms. Something
was different. But what? What about our lives makes us different from the previous generations? What makes you different from your parents and your parents different from your grandparents?
The fact is that we’re Americans first. Maybe we’re American-Asians and our parents were
Our parents pushed us to achieve. We did. Their journeys were difficult. Our journeys have
their own challenges. They crossed oceans without money, family, language, and jobs to give
us all of those things. Better things. We honor their sacrifice while we express our individuality,
aspirations, and new adversities. As you watch these films, remember that we, as a community,
have a responsibility to America. Why? Because, we know our Asian American community is
We are Americans. Whether we immigrated to this country, were born in this country, or were
raised in this country, many of us will choose to make our lives here. Why? Because it’s home.
The stories this year are the stories of home, in all its forms, making this festival timely and
relevant to the journeys of multiple generations.
And in this city, our nation’s city, we understand that these are ours: our stories, our voices, our homes. In this city, at this festival, we celebrate our journeys – those we have taken and those we have yet to take.
With that, we welcome you. Not only to this year’s festival, but we welcome you home.
